Samal Island : Historical Places

Samal Island offers some of the best natural sceneries there is: Monfort Cave Bat Colony, Malipano Island, Talikud Island, Kaputian Beach, best view of Mt. Apo, and Sinapaan Island to name a few.

But aside from natural sceneries, Samal Island also has some interesting, "unconventional", historical spots : the headquarters of Filipino Crusaders World Army, Inc. , and the Japanese Cave House. Both are not usually visited by tourists like the other spots but are actually equally interesting, especially if you will be able to hear the stories behind their historicity. I was fortunate to be able to visit them, thanks to Wilmar's (my wonderful Samalenyo companion) suggestion after I asked him if Samal Island has some historical spots I could go visit.

Photo Blogged : Malipano Island View Deck

No, I wasn't able to set foot at the famous Malipano Island of Davao Pearl Farm fame. I just looked at it from a distance and were able to appreciate its beauty, thanks to a strategically located view deck at the elevated eastern edge of Kaputian.

After visiting former Kaputian Town Hall, Kaputian Church, Kaputian Beach Park and Samal Art Legacy, we proceeded to our next destination : the Malipano Island View Deck.

Kaputian Beach and the Samal Art Legacy

Samal Island's Kaputian Beach is one of those I consider a favorite, and the time and effort it takes to reach it is nothing compared to what one would feel upon seeing it. Said beach is one of the first spots I visited on the first day of my tour around Samal Island.

Samal Island : Halls and Churches

Yes, I am a certified history buff. It's kind of a habit for me to look back to the past through reading history books, visiting places with historical significance, and discovering things and structures tied to the local history of a certain place. This is why, every time I visit a place, the very first thing I am looking for is its government hall, town plaza and churches because these are the places where all the powers and authority in a certain city or town reside, and where significant events pertaining to the town could have happened.

Samal Island is a curious case for me. Even before I became a blogger, I already know that once upon a time, there were three towns comprising the whole Island Garden City of Samal. When it was made into a city, those three municipalities were merged and became one once again. What made me curious is the fact that while some local politicians wants to divide their cities and municipalities (and even provinces) to create more cities or municipalities, Samal Island experienced just the opposite.

Because of me being inclined to historical stuff, the first thing I want to do upon arriving at Samal is to see and discover any traces of the three once municipalities of Babak, Penaplata and Kaputian. As accommodating as he can be, Wilmar, a friend and a local of the city, agreed to bring me to the halls and churches of the island. I was very fortunate because it turned out that all of former towns' structures are still existing and being utilized.

San Josenyong Gala is one of the Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs 2013!

In the beginning...

I started my blog last year, around July 2012, after trying my very first solo travel at Baler, Aurora. Too bad, I was not able to maintain the blog and it became stagnant for almost a year. Then, my interest in blogging was rekindled after doing so many travels alone and with other people. That was the time I felt the need to share my experiences and the joys I have felt touring the Philippines, and started writing blog entries again.

I formally launched my blog last July 2013 and from then on, I regularly posts new article every week. At first, my only audience are my family and friends. My mother actually joked, "puro kamag-anak lang naman natin nagbabasa ng blog mo eh!". That was true at first (and it was actually not half-meant but full meant! Lol!) After sometime, my viewership increased and I noticed that many of my new readers are actually not my relatives and friends anymore. I jokingly told my mother, "See ma? meron na kong mga readers na hindi ko kilala!"

Town hopping Negros Occidental : Historical. Serene. Sweet.

After some failed attempts to visit the island of Negros, I finally managed to do it last September 27-30, 2013. At last, I was finally able to experience and see the island with the sweetest people in the world!

I initially planned on touring Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental and Siquijor during this trip to Negros Island but when I looked at the map, I immediately realized that I can't do it in 4 days considering the fact that one of my objective is to visit, not only all of the Philippine Provinces, but all Philippine Cities as well.

Because of time and budget constraint, I changed my plan to touring the whole province of Negros Occidental instead, and visit all its 13 cities. I am actually intrigued about the very large number of cities the province has (the province with the most number of cities in the whole country) and I would want to check them all out.

Thus, my Negros Occidental Town Hopping Tour!

San Josenyong Gala's Community Project Featured in GoodNews at GMANewsTV

Yes, aside from being San Josenyong Gala as the newbie travel blogger, I also dedicate some time for some community projects that I hope would be able to help other people even in just a little way.

I, together with my best buddy Euel Von Asuncion and two other equally awesome classmates, Jay dela Cruz and Bernadette Magsalin, have been conducting free summer review classes since 2006, even before I have finished my college degree in UP Diliman. The project's aim is to help graduating students of the different high schools of San Jose del Monte City to prepare for the incoming college entrance exams in their senior year without the need to pay exorbitant fees charged by different College Entrance Exam Review Center.
